The U.S. Attorney’s Office claimed that the seven individuals were Chilean nationals and part of a “South American Theft Group” that “targeted high-profile athletes”

Seven Chilean Nationals, allegedly part of a “South American Theft Group,” have been charged in connection to burglaries at the homes of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and other athletes, according to authorities.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Middle District Florida announced in a statement on Tuesday, Feb. 18, that it has unsealed a criminal complaint charging Sergio Ortega Cabello, 38, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, 27, Pablo Zuniga Cartes, 24, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, 24, Bastian Orellano Morales, 23, Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, 22, and Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, 20, with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property.

According to the complaint, the individuals were allegedly part of a group that “targeted high-profile athletes” in both the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball League (NBA), and they would often burglarize the athletes’ homes while they “were away or playing in professional games” — which were often listed online.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office claimed that the seven individuals stole valuables worth over $2 million.

Investigators with the FBI noted in the statement that the theft group would “divide out responsibilities” among its members for the crimes including “renting vehicles,” “obtaining hotels or short-stay rentals,” “acquiring fraudulent identification” and contacting buyers of the stolen items. They were able to uncover the group through search warrants, subpoenaed information and other evidence, per the complaint.

The homes of Mahomes and Kelce with both burglarized in October 2024 within about 48 hours of each other, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and police reports obtained by PEOPLE.

Mahomes’ eight-acre Belton, Missouri estate — which the family purchased in September 2020 and moved into during the summer of 2023, per Architectural Digest — was broken into around midnight on Saturday, Oct. 5. Police with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the home at 12:08 a.m. on a burglary/breaking and entering call. There were no signs of forced entry to the home, according to the police report.

Leawood Police were not called to the property until 1:36 a.m. the following morning when it was reported that $20,000 was taken and a rear door was broken.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the thieves made off with “jewelry, watches, cash and other luxury merchandise” in the burglaries of the two Kansas City Chiefs players. Authorities also shared a photo of the thieves allegedly posing with the stolen items.

The complaint also claimed that a Tampa Bay Buccaneers player’s home was also burglarized while the team played in their home city in October 2024 and the Wisconsin home of a Milwaukee Bucks player was also burglarized in November 2024.

The thieves allegedly stole “jewelry, designer watches, a luxury suitcase and a firearm” in the Tampa case, while they took “several watches, chains, personal items, jewelry and cash” along with designer bags — all worth approximately $1.484 million — in the Wisconsin case.

A player for the Cincinnati Bengals and a Memphis Grizzlies player were also targeted in December 2024, per the statement. The thieves allegedly made out with $300,000 of stolen goods in the Cincinnati case and about $1 million in stolen goods in the Memphis case.
