G Flip loses it after Taylor Swift weighs in on her Cruel Summer cover: ‘I’m trying not to cry’
Australian musician G Flip is riding a wave of excitement after receiving a digital nod of approval from pop icon Taylor Swift.
The ARIA Award winning artist, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, took to social media to share their sheer excitement after Swift ‘liked’ their cover of her hit song Cruel Summer.
In a heartfelt video, an ecstatic G Flip expressed their disbelief and gratitude.
‘I just woke up and I’m looking at my phone and it’s blowing up because Taylor Swift liked my cover of Cruel Summer,’ G Flip said.
‘Thank you so much, Taylor, for liking it,’ she continued.
G Flip went on to pay homage to what they call ‘one of the best pop songs written of all time’.

They also explained the creative process behind their rendition.
‘I just wanted to put my own spin on it and write new string parts and a new arrangement, but still use little hints of the original, that magic,’ they said.
G-Flip admitted they had braced for potential backlash given the status of the original track.
‘I really thought that it was going to get a lot of hate because it’s such a big song. And like, when you take on a big song, you don’t want to destroy it or ruin it,’ G Flip said, visibly moved by the experience.

The cover, which now basks in the glow of Swift’s ‘like’, has catapulted the Aussie singer into the international limelight, with fans and fellow artists alike rallying around their innovative take on the summer anthem.
As they concluded their video, the joy in G Flip’s voice was evident.
