Meghan Markle’s latest Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” has ignited a wave of controversy, drawing sharp critiques and sparking discussions about its portrayal of royal life and Markle’s personal narratives.

The eight-episode series showcases Markle sharing recipes, lifestyle tips, and personal anecdotes, aiming to provide viewers with insights into her post-royal life. However, critics have labeled the show as “dystopian,” “smug,” and “pointless,” highlighting a perceived disconnect between Markle’s lavish lifestyle and the realities of everyday viewers. The Guardian awarded the series one out of five stars, criticizing its inauthenticity and superficial content.

Body language expert Judi James described the series as a “dystopian nightmare,” criticizing its portrayal of outdated stereotypes and subtle critiques of Markle’s past royal life. James also noted the show’s perceived inauthenticity, with viewers echoing sentiments that the content is superficial and accessible only to the wealthy.

Further controversy arose from Markle’s estranged half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., who criticized her portrayal of their childhood. He labeled her descriptions of a modest upbringing filled with fast food and microwave meals as “malarkey stories,” asserting that they were not poor and did not struggle as she claimed. Thomas Jr., who hasn’t spoken to Meghan in over a decade, accused her of fabricating these stories for sympathy.

Additionally, viewers identified an editing mishap in the fourth episode, further fueling criticism regarding the show’s production quality.

In the series, Markle subtly references her past royal life, toasting to a “new chapter” in her life surrounded by her mother and Prince Harry, which some interpret as a dig at her previous experiences within the royal family.

Despite the backlash, the series also highlights Markle’s earnest pursuit of joy and her dedication to homemaking, reflecting her life post-monarchy. Anecdotes shared with guests like Mindy Kaling and Alice Waters blend nostalgia with lighthearted conversations, aiming to present Markle as thoughtful, hardworking, and keenly attentive to detail.

Overall, “With Love, Meghan” has become a focal point for debates on authenticity, privilege, and the complexities of Markle’s transition from royal life to her current endeavors.
