Kate Beckinsale Details Recent Hospitalization and Vomiting ‘Copious Amounts of Blood’
Kate Beckinsale is known to clap back at a hater or two—and her latest defense detailed her recent hospitalization about which she’s been mostly tight-lipped, until now.
On July 9, the 50-year-old shared an Instagram video in response to comments that called her behavior childish. Still, the negativity poured in, and many followers pointed out that she appeared to have lost weight.
One suggested that she “go do some squats,” per People, and Beckinsale wasn’t having that.
“No, actually,” she began. She went on to recount how losing her stepfather in January caused her to experience intense physical symptoms of grief that ultimately landed her in the hospital. “I watched my stepfather die quite shockingly, my mother has stage 4 cancer, and I lost a lot of weight from stress and grief, quite quickly,” she wrote. “I was in the hospital for six weeks because the grief had burned a hole in my oesophagus [sic] which made me vomit copious amounts of blood.”
She continued: “I found eating very hard and I just worked very very hard on a movie that was actually quite triggering because it also involved the theme of the death of my father. So I’m not really concerned about what you think about my ass.”
It’s unclear exactly what Beckinsale’s diagnosis was, however, an esophageal rupture is a serious condition that can cause vomiting of blood, as well as chest pain, nausea, and difficulty swallowing, per the Cleveland Clinic. If left untreated, the hole can breed dangerous infection. Most commonly, an esophageal rupture is caused by injury from a traumatic event or one that worsens over time, but in rare cases, it can happen spontaneously under tremendous stress-induced repeated vomiting, also known as Boerhaave’s syndrome.
In March, Beckinsale began sharing cryptic photos from the hospital, never detailing why she was there. Fans were understandably concerned. She continued to share snaps of family and pets visiting as she laid in a hospital bed, but then returned to regular posting without much of an explanation. In April, she posed in a t-shirt that read, “Tummy Troubles Survivor” and captioned it with a bicep curling emoji.
Under Beckinsale’s health update comment, fans pressed her for further details. Many asked her how her health is doing currently, and to one commenter, she wrote that she’s doing “great now,” but didn’t share much else.
Still, we’re so glad to hear she’s doing better.
