In the wake of a decisive 40–22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, the Kansas City Chiefs have proactively restructured key player contracts to free up significant salary cap space for the upcoming season.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, currently on a 10-year, $450 million contract, agreed to restructure his deal for the fourth time since 2021, converting approximately $23 million of his 2025 salary into a signing bonus. Similarly, defensive tackle Chris Jones, under a five-year, $158.75 million contract, adjusted his agreement to provide the team with additional financial flexibility. Collectively, these moves have cleared over $49 million in cap space.

The Chiefs have strategically utilized this newfound cap space to address roster needs highlighted during their Super Bowl defeat. Notable acquisitions include offensive tackle Jaylon Moore, cornerback Kristian Fulton, running back Elijah Mitchell, and wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. Additionally, the team retained linebacker Nick Bolton and placed the franchise tag on guard Trey Smith to maintain offensive line stability.

To further manage their salary cap, the Chiefs traded All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears, saving an additional $16 million.

Despite the recent Super Bowl setback, sportsbooks continue to view the Chiefs as leading contenders for the upcoming season, with competitive odds alongside the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles.
