The American tennis stars are good friends and previously played doubles together.

But Gauff wasn’t happy when the world No. 5 ignored their plans and came to call her out.

Gauff and Pegula are both competing in this week’s WTA 1000 in Dubai. Before getting their respective singles campaigns underway, they had media duties to take care of.

And Gauff seized her opportunity to confront Pegula while the 30-year-old was filming a video. The world No. 3 approached and said: “You never responded to my text!”

Pegula froze and started laughing as Gauff explained her issue. “This girl invited me to go to the movies, I said, ‘Let me know when you want to go’ and she never responded,” she continued.

“So she’s fake!”
Pegula was thrown off. “I just got called out on social media,” she giggled before Gauff apologised for interrupting.

“Sorry to the interviewer over there,” the 20-year-old added, sitting down to wait for her turn to film some social media content.

“Do I start over or do I just keep going?” Pegula asked before Gauff continued her light-hearted attack. “You’re fake. F-A-K-E, fake,” she smiled.
The WTA shared footage of their hilarious interaction and Gauff reposted it, writing: “She texted me on Friday and it is now Sunday and still no response… smh @jpegula gonna go watch the movie by myself now.”
The former US Open winner kept her word, sharing a snap of herself watching Captain America: Brave New World at the cinema a day later. “lol @jpegula I made it without you,” she wrote.

Gauff even gave her followers a review, adding: “over hated movie!! this was good. one of the best movie for marvel in the post engage era. ya’ll some haters fr.

Pegula also got involved, digging herself out by sharing a screenshot of her text thread with Gauff. The 20-year-old had told her: “yeah i’m down to go either today or tomorrow! Sunday I have a later hit so I can’t then unless we go midday but just lmk.”

The world No. 5 hadn’t replied since but, after Gauff went to the cinema alone, Pegula sent a new text asking how the movie was.

Both women have a bye to the second round in Dubai. Gauff will face the winner of a clash between McCartney Kessler and recent Doha champion Amanda Anisimova. Meanwhile, Pegula takes on Liudmila Samsonova.
