Just In: Nicole Kidman Shares Practical Magic 2 Update……

Speaking with Variety at Time’s Women of the Year event in Los Angeles, Kidman was careful not to reveal too much about the highly-anticipated sequel, saying only that development on Practical Magic 2 was “movie ahead rapidly.” After Variety pushed for more information, such as if Kidman had seen a script, the actor playfully remarked, “I’m not answering anymore. You can ask Sandy [Bullock].” Kidman then confirmed that “we’re not doing it yet,” meaning that Practical Magic 2 hasn’t started production, as it “needs a little magic” still before filming can begin.
Released in 1998, Practical Magic stars Bullock and Kidman as the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, respectively, who come from a long line of witches. The movie, based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, follows the sisters as they use their magic to destroy the evil spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend. Directed by Griffin Dunne from a screenplay by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman, and Adam Brooks, Practical Magic received mixed reviews from critics and was a flop at the box office, earning $68 million against a $75 million budget. However, the film eventually became a cult classic after gaining popularity in the home video market and through television broadcasts.
A sequel to Practical Magic was reported to be in development in June 2024, with Kidman confirming that she and Bullock would reprise their roles the following month. While plot details remain under wraps, the sequel will be based on 2021’s The Book of Magic, Hoffman’s fourth novel in her Practical Magic series. Goldsman is writing the screenplay for the sequel. In January 2025, Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier entered talks to direct Practical Magic 2 for Warner Bros. She previously worked with Bullock on the 2018 Netflix movie Bird Box.
Denise Di Novi is also returning as a producer for Practical Magic 2. In August 2024, Di Novi promised fans that the sequel would remain faithful to the original movie’s themes. “I think the big mistake people make with sequels is when they kind of want to reinvent the wheel and be totally original and surprise people that it’s different or whatever,” Di Novi said. “[The team] gets how important the first movie is to so many people, women in particular, and we want to honor that for sure.”
Kidman was last seen in the A24 erotic thriller Babygirl, which was recently re-released in theaters for Valentine’s Day. Written and directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl stars Kidman as Romy Mathis, a high-powered CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins an affair with a much younger intern, Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson. Babygirl was well-received by critics, garnering a 76 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a hit at the box office, grossing almost $63 million worldwide.
