King Charles passes the baton at Buckingham Palace event
On March 10, 2025, King Charles III initiated the countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games by launching the King’s Baton Relay at Buckingham Palace. Accompanied by renowned cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, the King handed over a sustainably crafted wooden baton, symbolizing the commencement of the relay, with 500 days remaining until the Games begin.
Glasgow has been selected to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, stepping in after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew. The city previously hosted the Games in 2014, and the upcoming event is scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
In a unique approach, each of the 74 participating nations and territories will have a distinct baton, each inscribed with a different word from the King’s message.
