Travis Kelce Can’t Be the Chiefs’ Focal Point Anymore: Emmanuel Acho

Emmanuel Acho, a former NFL linebacker and current analyst, has expressed concerns about the Kansas City Chiefs’ continued reliance on tight end Travis Kelce as the focal point of their offense. Acho suggests that at 35, Kelce’s performance has declined, and the team should adjust their strategy accordingly.

Kelce’s 2024 season statistics indicate a decrease in productivity, with 823 receiving yards and three touchdowns—his lowest since his rookie year. Notably, his performance in the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl was underwhelming, totaling just 58 yards on six receptions. These figures have led analysts like Acho to question the sustainability of centering the offense around Kelce.

Acho emphasizes the need for the Chiefs to diversify their offensive approach, stating, “Travis Kelce needs to be the icing, not the cake. Build a team that can win a Super Bowl and be happy that you have Travis there.” This perspective aligns with the Chiefs’ recent efforts to bolster their receiving corps by drafting Rashee Rice in 2023 and Xavier Worthy in 2024, as well as acquiring veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Despite these concerns, Kelce has confirmed his intention to return for the 2025 season, fulfilling the final year of his contract. He acknowledges the need for improvement, especially after the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and remains committed to contributing to the Chiefs’ success.

As the Chiefs prepare for the upcoming season, balancing Kelce’s role while integrating new offensive weapons will be crucial. Adjusting their strategy could not only extend Kelce’s career but also enhance the team’s overall performance.
