Zelensky quizzed about minerals deal and peace plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has recently been at the center of discussions concerning a potential minerals agreement with the United States and his comprehensive peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia.
On February 28, 2025, President Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., to negotiate a minerals deal intended to leverage Ukraine’s rich deposits of critical minerals, such as titanium and lithium. These resources are essential for modern technologies and military applications, making stable supply chains a strategic priority for the U.S.
The meeting reportedly became contentious, with President Trump pressuring Zelensky to accept a peace agreement under terms favorable to U.S. and Russian interests. Critics viewed this stance as a retreat from international responsibility, potentially leaving Ukraine vulnerable and undermining NATO support. The proposed minerals deal ultimately failed due to its complexities and exaggerated claims about Ukraine’s mineral wealth.
In response to the ongoing conflict, President Zelensky has proposed a comprehensive ten-point peace plan addressing various aspects of the crisis:
1. Radiation and Nuclear Safety: Ensuring the safe use of nuclear energy and preventing radioactive disasters.
2. Food Security: Restoring agricultural exports to prevent global food shortages.
3. Energy Security: Protecting energy infrastructure from attacks and preventing the use of energy resources as weapons.
4. Release of Prisoners and Deportees: Facilitating the release of all prisoners and those forcibly deported, including children.
5. Restoration of Territorial Integrity Upholding international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
6. Withdrawal of Russian Troops: Ensuring the complete withdrawal of Russian military forces from Ukrainian territory.
7. Justice: Establishing a special tribunal to prosecute war crimes.
8. Environmental Protection: Addressing environmental damage caused by the war.
9. Preventing Escalation: Implementing security guarantees to prevent future aggression.
10. Confirmation of War’s End: Formalizing the end of the conflict through official documentation.
This plan aims to secure global support and establish a foundation for lasting peace.
European leaders have shown support for Zelensky’s peace initiatives. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have proposed an initial one-month truce covering air, sea, and infrastructure, aiming to test Russia’s intentions. This initiative includes forming a “coalition of the willing” to secure any ceasefire, contingent on U.S. support. Economic incentives, such as access to Ukraine’s mineral reserves, are also part of the plan to engage U.S. interested
Despite external pressures, President Zelensky remains steadfast in his refusal to concede any Ukrainian territory to Russia as part of a peace deal. He emphasizes the importance of continued closed-door discussions and expresses optimism about salvaging the relationship with the U.S., highlighting the need for ongoing support to deter further aggression.
The convergence of mineral negotiations and peace initiatives underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play. Securing stable mineral supply chains is critical for technological and military advancements, while achieving a sustainable peace plan remains paramount for Ukraine’s sovereignty and regional stability.
